Jay Shetty has done a great work on Think like a Monk. Think like a Monk is the Mixture of Jay shetty’s personal experience and the knowledge and wisdom of the monk gathered over period of time. The intention or aim of writing this book is to help people to achieve mental calmness and to think like a monk. Author Jay Shetty has discussed about two types of mind in this Book Monkey Mind (always busy, stressed and unproductive) and the Monk mind (Free from worldly affairs, calm and productive). This book is a complete guide that helps people to clear the roadblocks of their mind and think more clearly and focused. Jay Shetty has mentioned several rules of the Monks which is not easy to follow in this daily world. But also he has mentioned some exercises some advice that will help people to reduce stress, focus and increase the discipline in their every day life.

1. Monkey Mind and Monk Mind

To Think like a Monk One should have a different approach to life. An approach which is constructive in nature. It must be egoless. To think like a monk people’s life must be detached from all other things which adds no value in their life. And definetly its not easy to follow the monks rule in this society. It requires a lot of practice and hardwork to think like a monk.

Monkey mind has no goal. It just moves from one thought to another one challenge to another. The people with monkey mind are not Goal oriented they are aimless in their life.

In this book Jay Shetty had written some of the very effective advice which will help you to turn your mind from Monkey Mind to Monk mind. And this transfromation is very necessary for those who wants something big in their life.

2. Recognize Yourself

Today we are not living life that we want, we are living the life that others want. Our lives are based on what other think of us not what we think of ourselves .

An today we have lost our trueselves, Only because of thinking about others. We all are living someone others life. We have completely what our true nature is.

This book has taught me that if we live someone’s other life how can we be happy. We are not fulfilling the purpose of our life. Thinking like a monk requires detachment from unnecessary things. This may be means that you are putting the relations in your life at risk. Relationship with the person you love is also at risk. But what is life with risk ! So, this is the risk everyone must take in their life.

3. Focus on Values

Person must be aware of their values. What he thinks what he do only matters in his life. DO NOT COMPROMISE ON YOUR VALUES. Values defines people who they are. Values made you what you truly are.

This book has taught me the importance of the values in our life. And I also want all of you to focus on your values. Respect yourself.

Jay has given a technique how you can know your values :

Divide a blank page into three columns. Write in each column 1) the values that have shaped your life; 2) their origins (where these values came from—media, family, religion); 3) whether they are true to you. 

4. Life will never be Perfect

The Goal of the life is Living life to its fullest with your values, with the selfrespect. People will drag you back and at that time you must standup and walk forward. Remember and Accept that life will never be perfect. People will never act according to you. So keep yourself high everytime and do not think that you will be thrown off so easily, your foundation is strong.

This book has taught me this important thing that Accept what has happen to you, Because life will always be ‘Imperfect’ and you are the one who has to adjust according to the life. And I think thats why we are humans so that we can easily adjust ourselves according to life.

5. Stop Tracking your progress

Jay says that there is no measure of the Success, Means that you will never know that you have achieved every thing that you want in your life. Monkey mind will keep wanting more and more. So, do not keep track of your progress and just keep working.

In Think like a monk Jay Shetty has mentioned a very good line which I really follow in my life :

“There is no measure of success, no goal, and no end to a mediation practice. Don’t look for results. Just keep doing it. . . . The first sign that you’re doing it right is that you’ll miss it if you take a break.”

Being a monk not only means that you will have to be in jungle and meditate all day. You can also be a monk and practice their lifestyle while doing your daily work. Every person can be monk they just need to be focus their mind and keep calm always.
