What is this Book Consist of

Personal Finance is an important aspect of adult life, and often the most neglected. People don’t take finances seriously, and this is often due to ignorance or laziness.

Although laziness isn’t a cure for everything, R.K. Mohapatra walks us through the details of risks and investments, and teaches us how to protect our financial future.

Learnings from Investment Risk and Growth

Investment Risk and Growth a book about a specific topic.

It is helpful in understanding personal finance, and more specifically investment and risk nuances. However, it will not appeal to those who don’t have a working knowledge of finance or other financial terms.

Investment Risk and Growth makes use of a lot of examples, graphs and illustrations to help the reader understand the concepts.

A few tables are included to add to the wealth of information provided by the author.

Writting Style

The language used by the author is academic and I felt like I was reading a finance course book.

The emphasis is on explaining concepts using examples and illustrations. This will appeal to people who are interested in numbers.

It is a pleasure to see the author take great care in explaining important calculations such as returns, taxes liabilities, capital gains and losses, financial ratios, equity, etc.

What did I like ?

The book’s structure is well-designed. After a brief overview of investment and risk, the book explains the different options available to Indian investors depending on their financial needs, age and risk appetite.

The author then discusses in detail the various investment options – real estate, insurance, equity and debt.

While discussing various options, the author also discusses legal issues and other provisions. This added information, especially in relation to taxes, was a bonus.

Conclusion

Investment Risk and Growth will provide value to anyone who chooses to read it.

Although it will only appeal to a small number of readers, I believe the author did a good job in explaining and making the reader familiar with all aspects of risk and investment.

It would have been a great book if it had more theory than numbers. This is because I prefer to give numbers a miss, just like most readers.
